HeritageLegend behind our “Tharavadu House” and “Munnillathe Veedu”- combination of three houses such as

1. “Thekkumpadam Veedu”

2. “Mavinkal Veedu

3. “Ukkummal Veedu”.

It is said that the men and women of the above three houses came to “Cherukunnu” long back with goddess “Annapurneshwari” as devotees for doing service to the goddess. When the Cherakkal Raja performed the “Prathishta Karma” of the goddess “Annapurneswari” in the Krishna temple at Cherukunnu, these three family members mentioned above were settled down in the temple premises. It is not known when this actually took place. However, it is a fact that the families were connected with the above temple initially and these families have marriage relationship with each other. Apart from this, the women of these families were given in marriage to Namboothiries (Brahmins) who are reputed for their knowledge of Vedas, as well as “Pisharodies” who are also connected with several temples, who belong to the upper class communities. Probably, this may be either knowingly or unknowingly on the scientific theme of “cross pollination”

 Thekkumpadam Vettakkorumakan Temple

It is said that the above temple was established by the members of the Thekkumapadam Puthan Veedu as their “Tharavadu Temple” about 200 years back and worshipped the twin gods of “VETTAKKORUMAKAN (SIVAN)” and “OORPAZHASSI (VISHNU)” as their ancestral gods. Daily “pujas” –rites of worship- were done in this temple by Namboothiri in the morning as well as in the evening and this family considered the deities as their family deities who protect their family members.

We have “Theyyam” once in a year and “Thidambu Nritham” (dance with idols by Namboothiries) in the last week of December.

After some time, one of our “Karnavars” brought a deity known as “Wayanattu Kulavan” and kept in “Padinjatti” (one of the sacred rooms in the Tharavadu) and worshipped and subsequently established another small temple behind our Tharavadu House and the deity is Wayanattu Kulavan. Though the temple is maintained by us, it is run by a member of “Theyya” community residing close to the temple who was our tenant. Everyday lamps with coconut oil are lit by him in the evening in front of the temple. We have Theyyam also once in a year in this temple in the last week of December.

Apart from this, we are maintaining a “Eranji Nagam” (Sarpa Kavu) in the neighbourhood and Naga Puja is conducted regularly once in a year on the “Ayillyam” day of the Malayalam month of “Dhanu” i.e. December/January.
